Oxygen therapy is not exclusive to COPD

With the improvement of people's health awareness, the role of oxygen therapy has become increasingly prominent. We often think that oxygen therapy may be mainly associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but in fact, oxygen therapy is not exclusive to COPD, and there are many groups that urgently need oxygen therapy to maintain quality of life.

1、Pulmonary cystic fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease characterized by lung damage and is progressive (worsening of symptoms). Patients often produce excessive mucus and sweat both inside and outside the body, leading to lung blockages and frequent infections.

Therefore, supplemental oxygen therapy is a very common treatment option to stabilize the symptoms of pulmonary cystic fibrosis and enable patients to get better sleep, exercise effectively and maintain as normal a life as possible.

2、Pulmonary fibrosis

Pulmonary fibrosis is often confused with COPD and exhibits some similar symptoms, but the two are not the same, and they differ greatly in the cause and damage caused to the lungs. Pulmonary fibrosis is a restrictive lung disease that can cause the lungs themselves to become too stiff or too weak to inhale and exhale.

Maintaining proper oxygen levels in the blood at all times is essential to prevent and treat the symptoms of pulmonary fibrosis. According to research from UCSF Health, oxygen is needed when pulmonary fibrosis patients' saturation drops below 89% or arterial oxygen pressure drops below 60 mmHg.

3、Severe asthma

Asthma is a condition in which a person's airways become narrow, inflamed and filled with mucus, causing difficulty breathing and causing chest pain and fatigue. Most people with asthma have limited exercise capacity and may also experience more frequent and severe allergic reactions, especially seasonal allergies, which greatly affect quality of life.

Oxygen inhalation devices and nebulizers can be used to treat asthma attacks and are able to open the airways and reduce inflammation so that patients can breathe normally. However, if the patient is diagnosed with "acute severe asthma" or "severe asthma exacerbation," oxygen therapy must be performed to maintain healthy blood oxygen saturation.

4、Sleep apnea syndrome

Sleep apnea syndrome is a sleep disorder in which breathing stops during sleep. It is divided into obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea: Relaxation of the soft tissue near the throat leads to obstruction of the upper respiratory tract. Narrowing of the respiratory tract leads to sleep apnea.

Central apnea: the respiratory central nervous system has been damaged by stroke and trauma, and can not normally communicate breathing instructions, resulting in sleep respiratory dysfunction.

According to the "Multidisciplinary Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Adult Obstructive sleep Apnea", patients with obstructive sleep apnea need to be treated with positive pressure ventilation to eliminate all respiratory events, and if SaO2 still has a large fluctuation, oxygen therapy can be supplemented. For central sleep apnea syndrome, oxygen therapy is effective in relieving the symptoms of carbon dioxide retention.

5、Neuromuscular or chest wall disease

When patients develop neuromuscular or chest wall diseases leading to type II respiratory failure, non-invasive ventilation is preferred as the main therapy. However, when patients are not suitable for non-invasive ventilation, hypoxemia occurs or meet the treatment indications of oxygen therapy, oxygen therapy can be used as an auxiliary therapy. If non-invasive ventilation does not correct the hypoxia problem, additional long-term oxygen therapy is required.

6、Congestive heart failure

Congestive heart failure, a condition in which the heart cannot pump blood properly, usually results from a variety of conditions such as narrowing of the heart's arteries (coronary artery disease) or high blood pressure.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, heart failure is the leading cause of hospitalization for people 65 and older. Because the heart and lungs work together to keep oxygen-rich blood circulating throughout the body, when the heart is unable to circulate blood properly, symptoms such as shortness of breath, movement problems, and chronic fatigue can result.

When heart failure results in low oxygen levels in the blood, the doctor will judge according to the indications and prescribe oxygen therapy. Oxygen therapy does not completely cure heart disease, but it can prevent further damage to your body.

7、Pulmonary hypertension

Pulmonary hypertension refers to the clinical and pathophysiological syndrome caused by a variety of heterogenic diseases (etiology) and different pathogenesis of pulmonary vascular structure or function changes, resulting in pulmonary vascular resistance and pulmonary artery pressure increase.

According to the "China Pulmonary Hypertension Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines (2021 edition)", if pulmonary hypertension is caused by lung disease and hypoxia, it is mainly recommended to treat the primary disease, long-term oxygen therapy is recommended, and targeted drug therapy is not recommended. For patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, the treatment plan requires a combination of basic treatment, surgical treatment, drug therapy and interventional therapy, among which basic treatment mainly includes long-term home oxygen therapy.

8、Cancer or end-stage cardiopulmonary disease

In patients with end-stage cancer and cardiopulmonary diseases, dyspnea is one of the most common symptoms, and doctors can provide oxygen therapy for patients according to the actual situation of diagnosis and treatment and the development stage of the disease, in order to improve the comfort of patients as much as possible.

9、Cluster headache

When the symptoms of cluster headache are severe and obvious, the effectiveness of analgesics is limited, and high-flow oxygen therapy can be used to relieve symptoms, and this therapy has been classified as A Class A recommendation in several guidelines

Oxygen therapy can not only improve the symptoms of the disease or improve the quality of life of patients one of the ways, the premise of standardized oxygen therapy in addition to follow the doctor's advice, choose a professional oxygen generator is also particularly important.
